Mosbacher Riesling 2015 Buntsandstein

German Riesling comes in many different styles pending on area and sugar level. Trocken (dry) is the dry version often with lots of  fruit and a crisp acidity. Mosbacher, producer in Pfalz in Germany, has many different styles based on the geographical location of the vines. This one is from Wachenheimer with a special sandy soil. At first a very petroleum like smell, maybe from the skins of the grapes in a warm vintage? but the day after that had gone and it was more towards ripe apples, flowers and tropical fruit. The taste is beautifully balanced with lots of fruit and perfect acidity. Slightly high in sugar (just below 9g/l). Lovely wine that can be used as an aperitif or with white meat, fish and certain spicy foods. Georg Mosbacher Riesling 2015 Bundsandstein, Wachenheimer Ca 240 NOK or 14€

Riesling 2016 by Mosbacher, Pfalz

Georg Mosbacher in Pfalz, Germany has a wide selection of Rieslings. This is one of the basic versions which gives a very nice impression of what dry Riesling is all about. Pale straw yellow colour with hints of green. Green apple, citrus and hints of tropical fruit on the nose. Attractive soft and well balanced taste. Medium + acidity of the kind sort. At only 140 kr or 7€ this is a very good quality price ratio. Try with sushi, fish, spicy food and seafood. Riesling trocken 2016 Georg Mosbacher Pfalz

Markus Molitor Riesling 2015

The 2015 vintage is just perfect for German Riesling and this example from the Mosel valley by Markus Molitor is just delightful Medium straw colour. Delicious nose of ripe apples, citrus , some spice and minerality. The taste is offdry although it says dry on the bottle. The acidity (medium +) matches the sugar level in a nice manner and there is a lot of fruit to go with it. Nice minerality in the aftertaste as well. Perhaps is just too approachable? Try with fish and sushi. Markus Molitor Riesling 2015 Mosel Ca 10€ or 160 NOK

Wittmann Morstein Riesling 2005

Riesling when they get a bit of age in the bottle can develop a nice petroleum smell. This 2005 by Wittmann had exactly that when we drunk it the other day. Morstein is single vineyard in Rheinhessen, Germany. Lovely citrus fruit, flowers and petroleum on the nose. Smooth, silky and fruity taste with perfect acidity. A very decent dry white wine. Wittmann Riesling 2005 Morstein, Rheinhessen

BattenfeldSpanier Riesling 2014

Leitz Riesling Spaetlese 2011

This is a late harvest Riesling from Rheingau in Germany. Spatlese normally comes in two versions; one that is dry and one that is sweet. This is the dry version (Trocken) which makes it very fruity and adaptable to many kinds of food. Light green yellow colour and flavours of citrus and apple. Lots of fruit and a good acidity. This should fit most types of asian food, spicy, salted and smoked food. I tried it recently with the Norwegian traditional dish of dried salted rib of lamb (pinnekjøtt), which turned out to be a perfect match thanks to the acidity and freshness of the wine. Leitz Riesling Spaetlese Trocken 2011 Rudesheimer Bischofsberg Rheingau Low price

Leitz Rudesheimer Spaetlese Trocken 2011

This is a dry Riesling which is harvested approximately 7 days later than the normal ones. Thus the term Spatlese on the label which means late harvest. From this harvest a sweet white or dry white can be produced. This one by Leitz is a dry version that fits very well with Aisan food for example. Straw yellow colour with aromas of ripe aples, citrus and some mineralty. The taste has more body than a normal Riesling and is refreshing and fruity with a medium length. The wine is from Rheingau (wine district in Germany) and from the town of Rudesheimer and a single vineyard called Bischofsberg. At a price of 165 NOK or 12€ it is very good value for money.

Deidesheimer Reiss Riesling Spatlese 1959, Pfalz by Dr.Burklin Wolf

What an exciting wine? More than 50 years old! Omg... The colour of this wine was more sherry like coloured with a pale rim. The smell was a bit caramelised with buttery overtones. Overall still a very nice balanced wine with a pronounced acodity. Somewhat old in style with tones of sherry. A great experience. Deidesheimer Reiss Riesling Spatlese 1959 Pfalz Dr.Burklin Wolf

Bernkasteler Riesling Auslese by Robert Schmitz Herges - Mosel

I had the pleasure of trying these two Rieslings from Mosel in germany the other day at a special winetasting. The 2010 was a bit young and undeveloped of course. Pale straw colur and a ecent nose of apricot, tropical fruit, peach and slight hint of petroleum. The taste was quite elegant with nice ripe fruit and medium acidity and length. The sweetness of the wine was perhaps too pronounced as I had expected some more acidity. 2010 however was a warm year throughout Europe and might have influenced just that. Bernkasteler Riesling Auslese 2010 Robert Schmitz Herges Mosel The 1976 of the same producer was an exciting connection. The color was medium yellow and the nose was filled with light petroleum, sherry like notes, dried fruit and cinnamon?... A very good taste for being such an old wine with lots acidity. The sweetness of the wine had nearly disappeared as it felt less sweet in the mouth. Very good balance and drinking really well now. Barockhaus Riesling 2013 Mosel

I had this Riesling the other day as an aperitif and with a special starter with lots of cream. Riesling from Mosel has a very distinct acidity and it was the same with this as well. Very refreshing wine with a lovely fruit and balance. The acidity provides energy and life to the wine which makes it really delicious to drink.

Im Sonnenschein 2006 , Pfalz- Riesling

The Pfalz region in Germany is an extension of the Alsace in the France. It's the driest wine region in Germany and there are some very nice Rieslings produced in this region. One example is this one from Weingut Økonomierat Rebholz which is also a Grosse Gewachs, i.e from the one of the best plots. Medium golden color, which is a bit surprising but anyway… Gourgeous smell of ripe apples, honey and petroleum. Lively fruity taste with a great minerality and acidity. Delicious!
