Life is too short to drink bad wine

IGT wine from the Tuscany region based upon 100% Sangiovese from the hills nearby Florence. Dark red colour with brick rim. Dark fruit on the nose with cherries, vanilla, dried fruit and old barrels. Powerful wine , full bodied, but also lots of fruit and round nice tannins with a beautiful balanced aftertaste. A lovely wine. Super lovely Barolo by Falletto produced in Bruno Giacosa cellar. 2005 is a "kind" year in Barolo with wines that are approachable early on.   Quite a medium red colour with red brown rim. Great smell of raisins, chocolate, cigar and some flowers. Well balanced wine with integrated tannins and a very long finish. Some cherries on the palate and medium + acidity. All notes above were done in a blindtasting. (Score 18.6) A great wine! Barolo 2005 Falletto Ca 80€

We were served this (without knowing what it was) as wine number one and three in a Blindtasting. On the first one the colour was medium dark red with a clear red brown rim indicating it to be an old wine or a Nebbiolo. On the nose it had discrete dried fruit, plum and cherries. Again it could be a Nebbiolo.The taste was however quite light with very little acidity and tannins (close to none) drifting the panel away from the Nebbiolo track. Overall score 15.60 When it was served as wine number three the story was slightly different: The colour was described as deep dark red with brown rim (it appeared to be darker than the first one). The nose was more apparent with dark fruit, dried fruit and plum, Very similar to wine one. The taste was however the biggest variation as it was fresher, seemed younger with more acidity and tannins. As a consequence it was scored to be 17.50. The panel then agreed both were old Bordeaux probably around 20 years...

First wine Medium dark red wine with red rim. Decent smell of dried fruit and ripe cherries. Quite attractive nose. Very soft but big taste. Some smooth tannins and a slightly unripe ripe finish. Good length with taste of dark fruit and cherries. Overall good quality although not fantastic. Score 16.60 Ch. Chantalouette Pomerol Ca 20€ Second wine Purpur red dark colour with long legs. Smell of horse, leather, farm and black currant. Well balanced taste of dark berries with very limited tannins. Smooth. Really nicely balanced wine that are drinking well right now. Bordeaux?? Score 18,50 Ch. Poujeaux 2004 Moulis Ca 25€ (back then)   Third wine Very dark red colour with purpur rim. Sweet red berries on the nose. Some flower and rose as well. Hints of chocolate. Dark chocolate and fruit on the taste. Very big and long. Lovely balance with smooth tannins and delicious acidity. Overall a very good and big Pinot Noir !!! (how wrong can you be...

Wine # 1 Pale red colour with Burgundy rim. Say no more. This is Pinot Noir! On the nose packed with sweet red fruit like raspberries , hint of chocolate and some dried fruit. Very soft smooth and fruity taste with absolutely no resistance. Velvety tannins and low acidity. Perhaps a bit jammy. Very drinkable wine and the panel concluded it has to be new world Pinot Noir! (and we were right....) Anthill Farms Pinot Noir 2012 Sonoma Coast Score 18,0 (Price 380 NOK or 50$) Wine # 2 Very similar pale red colour as wine no 1. On the nose more darker fruit with hints of pepper. More complex smell as well. Definitely Pinot Noir again. The taste is better with more structure and acidity although it is still a bit "jammy" with some spices. A complex wine and the panel is dithering between new world and Burgundy. We were told Burgundy and then I said it had to be a warm year, not Volnay and not Montille as the producer. and it was in fact all those things...!! ...

Wine # 1 Medium purple coloured wine with purple rim. Somewhat closed on the nose, but with some notes of red fruit and hints of spices and chocolate. Very juicy and fruity taste and virtually tannin free taste. The acidity is not overwhelming, but still very much present. A decent wine for every day drinking. Panel somewhat lost between Pinot Noir and Sangiovese with Barbera discarded due to lack of colour. Barbera d'Alba 2012 Bruno Giacosa Score 15.90 Ca 250 NOK Wine # 2 Medium red colour with a red rim. Massive and impressive nose of flowers, dark fruit, spices, tar and licorice. The taste is really demanding and the wine certainly require food to blossom. An enormous acidity and also firm tannins that play together quite well at this stage. Definitely a Nebbiolo. Oops wrong again as it is 100% Aglianico from Taurasi in south Italy. Massive wine. Old coloured wine, tawny like. Smell of old cellar, like an old Bordeaux really. Dusty old sweet cherries on the nose. Nicely balnced wine but perhaps a bit short on the length with no more tannins left and quite an innocent acidity. Still a very nice wine and totally clearly a Bordeaux according to the whole panel. So when did you last mistake a Burgundy for being Bordeaux Parker once asked. The answer is 16 October in this case as the wine is a Beaune Premier cru from the Cent Vignes parcel. Beaune 1er cru Cent Vignes 1997 Beaune Louis Dufouleur Ca 25£ Total score 16.20 Second wine very similar to the first but with much more acidity and fruit to it. The colour was deeper red and younger. Nose was packed with red fruit. Smooth and quit a long balanced aftertaste. A much nicer wine and some debate in the panel as to where. In fact same producer same plot justa 2003 vintage. Which in itself is a bit surprising as the acity is very pronounced and for 2003 (warm ...

Medium dark red and purple rim. Very perfumed nose with flowers, dark berries, flowers  and hay. Very nice indeed. The taste does not match as it is slightly sweet, a bit of pepper, jammy and one feels the high alcohol. Some cherries as well. Totally different taste vs nose. Nice wine but not brilliant. Medium to light red colour. Discrete, but very nice bouquet of roses, flowers and some red berries. A just fantastic long and velvety full bodied taste with a nice acidity. Perfectly balanced and a wonderful length. Brilliant. Superb wine! Burgundy??? 100% Grenache from 100 year pre-phylloxera vines from Montsant (area around Priorat). Bottle 764 of 1985. Very light red colour. Amazingly seductive smell of dried fruit, fresh red fruit, raspberries and roses. Incredible balanced taste. So soft and elegant. Loooong taste. Complex. Nearly cream like. Deep dark colour and purple rim. Complex and attractive nose of dark fruit, leather, forrest, dark small berries (krekling). The taste is filled with fruit like dark berries and black currant. Big and long finish. Nice acidity and soft integrated tannins. A great wine with lovely balance. We give up.... 100% Carignan.. A long time since the last blind tasting, but that has not affected the panel anything. This is a Pinot Noir from down under was quite rapidly the general opinion to great surprise by the host. Medium red colour with purple rim and with a gorgeous bouquet of red fruit, vanilla and chocolate. The taste was ever so seductive and well balanced. Super easy to drink with smooth sexy tannins. Felton Road "Cornish Point" Pinot Noir 2011 Central Otago, New Zealand Score 17.30  Ca 40£

The panel continued their parade march and after some deliberations, it was concluded that was a new world Cabernet Sauvignon…. Deep dark red colour and a compact and attractive smell of dark berries. Yet another smooth taste, but this time bigger and more solid with some soft tannins. The aftertaste was somewhat "warm" indicating high alcohol and supporting the warm climate theory. The panel being over confidence proclaimed this dark red wine with purple rim and a big spicy blackberry smell to be a warm climate Shiraz. Of course we were finally wrong…. It was however a super lovely big wine with quite a mouthful and firm but soft tannins. Long aftertaste and beautifully balanced. Yet again a really nice wine. The answer though….was 100% Tempranillo from a small area called Toro in Spain... Nymanthia 2009, Toro in Spain Score 18.50 Ca 45£ ( a bargain)

Medium purple colour  with a delightful smell of sweet raspberries, some dried fruit and forrest ground. Juicy taste with a nice acidity that is just right. Very little tannins. Overall good balance and a very soft  taste. Perfect cabin wine and definitely Pinot Noir ! (but not from Burgundy....) Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2011 Marlborough, New Zealand Delightful Pinot at ca 240 NOK Score 17.1

Medium red colour with a red brown rim. Ripe red berries, vanilla, some wood and raw forrest floor. Similar to wine 1 but perhaps more refined. The taste has medium acidity and medium tannins. Very fruity wine with soft tannins and a medium aftertaste. Perhaps lacking some acidity. Probably Pinot, but due to the colour could it be another FFB? Vosne Romanee 2007 by Anne Gros "Clos de la Fontaine" Ca 55€ Score 17.1

Deep dark red colour with purple rim. Dark berries, blackcurrant, roasted coffee beans, pencil sharpener and an overall very clear and complex bouquet. Beautiful balnced wine with medium acidity and big but soft tannins. Great structure and lots of dark fruit. Big and long finish. A great wine and definitely Medoc ! Opps! Pomerol? You gotta be kidding... (must be the 10% Cabernet Franc...) Vray Croix de Gay 2007 Pomerol Ca 50€ Score 18.30

Blindtasting Revheim May 2013 Wine #1 Medium ruby colour with garnet rim. Discrete smell of red plum and some dried fruit. Red fruit on the taste as well , somewhat unbalanced taste with little acidity and tannins. Not exactly brilliant. Origin: Panel lost Chianti 2009, Buccianera, 15€ Score 14,40 

Wine #2 Blindtasting Revheim May 2013 Deep dark purple colour and rim. Lots of dark fruits (+ krekling), coffee and liquerice on the nose. Medium acidity and tannins. Some oak and not too fruity. Very dry finish. Too much oak? Big dry and heavy wine. Where are we? Do not know...... Barbera d'Asti 2011 Cascina Castagna, Ca 12€ Score 16,80 Very atypical Barbera (lacks fruit)
