Burgundy tasting Friday 5 November 2010

Two whites and five reds were tasted with the following aim;
- taste the difference between Chablis and white Burgundy
- taste the difference between various appelations (climate) for red Burgundy
- taste the difference between village wine and premier cru

Chablis 1er cru "Vaillons" 2008 by Christian Moreau, Medium Price 242
Yellow green colour with aromas of apple, citrus and minerals. Lively long taste with good acidity and minerality.

Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru "les Caillertes", Lequin-Colin Medium Price 350
Pale yellow colour, sitrus, green apples and minerals. Long solid mouthful with balanced acidity, fruit and subtle oak character. Lovely stuff.

Savigny-les-Beaune by Pavelot, Medium price 250
Red from more sandy/limestone soil. Medium dark red colour with elegant aromas of red current, raspberry. Well balanced light taste with marked and balanced acidity.

Beaune 1er cru "Boucherottes", by Anne Gros, Medium price 270
"Boucherottes" is close to Pommard and this wine is bigger and "fatter" than the Savigny les Beaune. Darker red colour, pronounced smell of delicate red berries and raspberries. A big mouthful, packed with fruit and beautiful balance and long velvety taste. A bargain at 270.....!

Chambolle-Musigny 2006, Patrice Rion, Medium price 350
Bright red colour, lively smell of red berries and subtle oak. Subtle delicate and elegant taste with knife edge balance between fruit and acidity. Lovely stuff. Chambolle is the queen in Burgundy with feminine wines. Soil is just chalk with no clay. Beautiful!

Chambolle-Musigny 1er cru "les Charmes" 2004 by Patrice Rion, High price 550
Darker red colour, packed with lovely red fruit and berries. Perfect structured taste with gentle tannins and an exquisite aftertaste. Needs 5-6 years to show off the true quality. This wine cost the same in Norway as in UK. Fantastic stuff!

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "les Evocelles" 2004, Louis Boillot, Medium price 340
"Les Evocelles" is in the north of the appelation up on the steep hill. Deep dark red colour, elegant ripe raspberries and cherries. Big solid taste packed with beautiful fruit. Great stuff! This wine is actually cheaper in Norway than UK. Wonderful!

Bordeaux- Le prelat du Ch. Pape Clement 2004

This is one of two second wines of the famous and expensive Ch. Pape Clement in Graves. Although young,  2004, this wine drinks really well already if you put it on carafe a couple of hours before consumption. Dark red colour, with a very attractive smell of blueberries and dark berries, its a full bodied wine with firm but nice tannins that goes best with some food. 2004 although not the best of vintages, keep surprising me with good drinkable wines at affordable prices, because from 2005 and onwards there is a big step up in prices.... Grapes; Cabernet Sauvignon 60% and Merlot 40% Price around 20€ P+

Wine # 2 Blindtasting Ganddal

Deep dark purple colour. Dark berries, cherries and mint chocolate. Full bodied with soft tannins. Reminds me of an Amarone.. A very nice wine indeed. Panel is way out as it is from the Rhone valley. Gigondas 2009 by Guigal Score 17.60  Ca 20€ or 220 NOK

Ogier Chateauneuf du Pape 2010

This is a quite reasonable Chateauneuf du Pape (ca 200 NOK or 15€). The colour is medium ruby color which was a bit surprising. Nose of ripe black cherries and liquerice with a medium + body and finish with firm tannins. The wine can be drunk now but has definitely the potential for ageing (5-10 years). Chateauneuf du Pape 2010, Ogier Bring out the steak!
